Don’t worry, we’ll be lenient on spelling

Hiya Skeleton Crew,

Since this week kinda went sideways on me, we’re gonna have a regular trivia today to make up for Wednesday’s missin issue. Paid subscribers’ll get their special issue this weekend!

Answers to Last Time

  • Brickmar Manufacturing Corp. was behind the original BEDAZZLER, so the specific past participle adjective I was lookin for was bedazzled.
  • That rock supergroup (for some loose definition of “super”) I was talkin ’bout was Damn Yankees.

The throughline here’s that Bedazzled & Damn Yankees are both movies that’re based on the Faust legend – i.e., a guy who sells his soul to the devil for somethin or other.

Today’s Trivias

Trivia 1

Folks LOVE to adapt that ol’ Faust story! One of my faves is a teevee episode titled “The Devil’s Hands Are Idle Playthings”, which was actually planned to be the series finale for what teevee show? The plot’s a riff on that ol’ “Devil Went Down to Georgia” song – a fella takin on the devil in a musical showdown with his soul on the line – ’cept in the teevee episode it’s the holophonor the main character wants to learn, not the fiddle.

This show ended up gettin picked up for a few more seasons on Comedy Central – & then a decade-ish-long hiatus before even MORE seasons started comin out on Hulu – so it didn’t actually end up bein a series finale after all.

Trivia 2

I can’t talk ’bout Faust without at least mentionin ol’ Jonny von Goethe, whose two-part play Faust is low-key the greatest work of German literature of all time. (Or not – I dunno! – I’m just tellin youse all what I’ve heard.)

What name does Satan’s agent go by in Goethe’s play? For the purposes of everyday conversation I think most folks just use this name interchangeably with stuff like “Satan” and “The Devil”, but if ya wanna split theological hairs (& who doesn’t!!) I’d say he’s more along the lines of “a high-rankin demon” than “Lucifer himself”.

OK then

Byeeeeeeeeeeeeee
