A symphony of juice

Hiya Skeleton Crew,

After what I’d say was a pretty darned successful opening week at the Skeletodeon, I think I can finally take it easy for li’l bit. The movies are up there on the silver screen, the popcorn machine’s popping away, & a few folks are even stopping by to pay for tickets! At the very least, it could be goin a heckuva lot worse, y’know?

Answers to Last Time

  • Goliath, Elephant, Hercules, & Titan are all different kinds of beetles.
  • Science-minded folks might know that the Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer got shortened into Juice by way of syllabic abbreviation.

The theme there was Beetlejuice, which was the second movie I ever showed at the Skeletodeon! (After Rocky Horror, like I talked about last week.)

Fun fact, Beetlejuice sounds just like Betelgeuse, which is the brightest star in Orion. Folks who subscribe to the paid edition of the newsletter got a cool TEN extra trivias last Friday where all the answers were also the names of stars! Just something to think about, if ya don’t already have a paid subscription 💀

Today’s Trivias

Trivia 1

Last Thursday I mentioned a buncha members of the Queensbridge-based Juice Crew—Marley Marl, Big Daddy Kane, Biz Markie, & Roxanne Shanté, to be specific—who I mentioned ’cause I was kinda tryna make a li’l joke ’bout the Juice Crew crewin the Juice spaceship. Get it??

Well, rather ’n brush all those folks aside right away, I hope ya don’t mind if we maybe dig into a li’l hip-hop history for a sec or two.

A buncha members of the Juice Crew (the aforementioned Marley Marl & Big Daddy Kane, plus also Masta Ace, Kool G Rap, & Craig G) were all on a pretty famous track called “The Symphony”, which was on Mr. Marl’s debut album In Control, Volume 1. Well, “The Symphony” which is generally considered by hip-hop heads as a classic example of what kind of “cut”?

Now, look, I ain’t gonna pretend like I’m some kinda authority on hip hop music here. Heck, the first time I heard this term, I thought I’d misheard the word cut as comitatus! So lemme quote Complex—which has got at least a li’l more cred than my old bones can bring to the party—who defines this term as “a collaborative track between at least four rappers, and bringing together at least two acts.”

Trivia 2

Like I said earlier, the name of the Juice spaceship is somethin called a syllabic abbreviation: it comes from some of the beginnin syllables of the phrase Jupiter Icy Moon Explorer.

What syllabic abbreviation is used for the organization that existed from 1919 to 1943 & that’s associated with things like Bolshevization & the Third Period & the Popular Front strategy?

OK then
