I mentioned last week that that episode of Futurama was titled “The Devil’s Hands Are Idle Playthings” – which is, let’s be honest, a real dang good episode title.

But that wasn’t the first time the holophonor showed up in Futurama. Nah, that’d be an episode titled “Parasites Lost”, where the Planet Express gang has to shrink down^[1] to evict a buncha parasitic worms.^[2] But although that episode’s title is a pun on John Milton’s epic poem Paradise Lost, can ya tell me what 1966 movie is the episode’s actual plot a pastiche of?

In the Futurama episode, the crew’s aim is to go to Fry’s pelvic splanchnic ganglion & tickle it in just the right way to trigger a (potty humor alert!) big ol’ bowel movement that’ll expel the worms. I’m guessin part of the reason the writers chose that particular nerve is that, in addition to bein related to pelvic functions, splanchnic ganglion’s a pretty funny phrase. I mean, just listen to it: splanchnic ganglion! Ha! Jeez, sometimes I’m real glad that I don’t got all that weird stuff in my—

I mean, uh, I DO got all this weird stuff! In my body!! My very normal body, which has got nerves & blood & guts & definitely ain’t just a skeleton that ya can play xylophone on the ribs like in the cartoons!!!

But so like anyways, I mean, like, well … uh, uh— OK, how ’bout this: can ya tell me what’s the longest nerve in the autonomic nervous system, it gets its name from how it wanders through the body ’cause it’s so dang long, also it helps with stuff like heart rate & peristalsis & the gag reflex & prob’ly some other stuff too?
