Let’s talk about genies, baby
Hiya Skeleton Crew,
So like I was sayin yesterday, my friend Gene got trapped in this old ICEE machine I found in the locked closet behind the concession area at my movie theater.
Now, I asked my pal, I asked him: “Gene, ya said ya’d been trapped in there for I think it was like three THOUSAND years, was it? How … how’s that work, exactly?”
& Gene said back to me, he says, “WHAT MEANEST THOU?”
& I say, “Just, like … well, I guess I’m just kinda surprised to hear ICEE’s been in business for that long?”
Well! Gene didn’t exactly take that line of questioning so good. But we eventually got it cleared up,[1] & I was finally able to ask Gene a question I’d been wonderin about for a while now. I said:
“Gene, ya GOTTA tell me: how do ya spell it?”
& he says, “SPELL WHAT”
& I say, “Y’know. The thing that ya are! I mean, I’ve seen folks say djinn, I’ve seen genie of course, I’ve seen jinni & ginn & jhinn & djinny—”
“NO WAY” he says.
“Yes way!” I retort.
“NO,” he says again, & then: “I REFUSE TO BELIEVE THEE. NO ONE IN THE HISTORY OF THIS PLANET HAS EVER SPELT IT D-J-I-N-N-Y.”
Anyways, this story’s been goin on long enough, but the point is that he said any spellin is fine – any spellin other than djinny, that is – & since it’s a transliteration thing it ain’t like there’s one “right” answer. But since I like myself a dj digraph, I’ma go with djinn.
Answers to Last Time
- It’s Scheherazade who’s the narrator of the One Thousand and One Nights – & don’t worry if ya didn’t spell it exactly that way, I still gave ya credit.
- The movie that Roger Ebert (RIP) hated so much was North, directed by Rob Reiner (RIP) & starrin Elijah Wood (not RIP, thankfully!).
Today’s Trivias
Trivia 1
In case anyone out there’s tryna get into turntablism, I think the name DJ Inny’s available for the takin. Just a thought!
But so on the topic of djinn & DJs … can ya tell me who goes by the stage name DJ DIESEL when he’s on the decks? Ya prob’ly know this guy more from the world of sports, where I guess he gave himself the nickname “Diesel” on account of his physical style of play.
Trivia 2
Usually I try & mix up the topics on a given trivia day – but today I’m gonna “Push It” with another DJ question. After all, it ain’t “None of Your Business” how I write my newsletter!
Let’s talk about Ms. Deidra Roper, a.k.a. DJ Spinderella.[2] She’s the third (unnamed) member of what group that got inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame last year?
OK then
