Answers to Last Time

  • Internet oldheads might remember the chat app ICQ, which came out in the late ’90s. It actually only got shut down just last year!
  • Marcel Duchamp’s L.H.O.O.Q. is a defaced reproduction of the Mona Lisa.

Today’s Trivias

Trivia 1

Mr. Duchamp’s most famous painting has probably gotta be his Nude Descending a Staircase, which looks like this:

It’s a Calvin & Hobbes strip! Panel 1: A close-cropped frame of a shirtless Calvin shoutin, “HEY, LOOK AT ME!” | Panel 2: A wider shot showin Calvin, naked, walkin down a staircase, sayin “‘Nude Descending a Staircase’!” His mom is lookin on, unimpressed. | Panel 3: Calvin’s sulkin in his bathtub, sayin to Hobbes, “Nobody understands art.”

Ha! Just kiddin, it looks like THIS:

It’s Marcel Duchamp’s 1912 masterpiece, _Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2_. I ain’t really sure how to describe it, so I think for this one ya might just hafta take my word for it.

That painting was first shown off at a gallery in Paris in 1912, but it made a MUCH bigger splash the next year when it got exhibited at the International Exhibition of Modern Art.

The folks who ran the exhibition held it at a location they’d rented out on Lexington Avenue in New York. But what purpose did that location serve when it wasn’t shocking Americans with the most recent developments of the European avant-garde?

Trivia 2

Whenever I see the name Mona Lisa I always think of that movie Anomalisa that came out a few years ago? Didja ever see it? It came out in like 2015, it was a stop-motion animated movie, it actually got nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars (it lost to Inside Out). The movie’s about a guy who perceives everyone in the world as a basically nondescript identical person (all voiced by Tom Noonan).1 Then he meets someone named Lisa who is different from everyone else—& hilarity ensues!2

It was good! I mean, I didn’t LOVE love it, but it was real solid!!

Anyways, Anomalisa was written & co-directed by what screenwriter who also wrote Being John MalkovichAdaptation, & Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind?

OK then

Byeeeeeeeeeeeeee

1 It’s a spin on a real phenomenon called the Fregoli delusion.

2 LOL jk, it’s not hilarity, actually it’s more like ... existential dread??
