Get your corpse flowers straight
Hiya Skeleton Crew,
Youse guys! The WEIRDEST thing just happened to me out here in the mystery woods!!
Like I said last week, I’d kinda been goin ’round in circles. Then, after what felt like a day’s worth of drivin, somethin changed: the sounds of the forest all got real quiet – like everythin’d been blanketed in a deathly pall of snow – & all of a sudden I found myself in some kinda clearin. Or, I dunno if “clearin” is the right word, it more seemed like a whole section of the forest had caught fire & there were just ashes & burnt-out tree stumps as far as I could see.
Then, after I drive on for a few minutes, I start smellin this real foul odor. I mean, it’s BAD, it’s like dead bodies or somethin. & then …
Actually, hold on a sec – before I get too wrapped up in this here story of mine, maybe let’s get the answers to last time sorted.
Answers to Last Time
- Misery is the Stephen King book that got Kathy Bates an Oscar.
- Company is the Stephen Sondheim musical that got him his first Tony.
Today’s Trivias
Trivia 1
OK, where was I? Ah, right, so my olfactory foramina are gettin pummeled by some kinda horrible smell, like rotten flesh or somethin. It’s not great! Finally, I see this:

Well, THAT explains things! It’s one of those “corpse flowers” – a Rafflesia arnoldii, y’know the one?[1] They’re evolved to attract carrion beetles & flies to help with pollination. It’s actually the world’s largest individual flower, apparently! So that’s fun.
Y’know, I just noticed, that Rafflesia plant really looks a lot like … that one Pokémon! Ya know who I’m talkin ’bout? It’s not Gloom – it’s the one Gloom evolves INTO. But not Bellossom. The OTHER one.
Ah jeez, ah jeez, this is KILLIN me! Maybe ya can help me out here. What Pokémon is it I’m tryna remember?
Trivia 2
But so back to my story: I go up to the big stinky flower, & what do ya think I see? Nothin less than AN ANCIENT MAYAN CODEX! No joke!! I thought there were only like four of those left anywhere in the world. But I guess this weird forest has got a fifth one?
Anyways, I been readin through it. My Chʼoltiʼs admittedly a bit rusty, but I’m makin my way through well enough. There’s a lot in here ’bout this spot called Xibalba, which is basically like the Mayan underworld.
It’s actually a pretty crazy coincidence, ’cause just last month I was watchin this movie where the name Xibalba comes up a few times. It was one of those movies by Darren Aronofsky – y’know, the guy who did Requiem for a Dream & Black Swan? – & it’s one of his weirder ones: it got Hugh Jackman as a scientist who’s lookin for a cure for his wife (Rachel Weisz) who’s dyin of brain cancer – but then he’s also a Spanish conquistador in the service of Queen Isabel (also Rachel Weisz)? Oh, & he’s ALSO also a bubble-bound space traveler in the future?? With Rachel Weisz involved again, somehow???
I mean, I honestly liked the movie, it’s just kind of a trip to explain.
But so anyway – as ya mighta guessed – I’m gonna ask ya to please name this movie I’m talkin ’bout.
OK then
Byeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Not to be confused with the Titan arum, another so-called “corpse flower”. Titan arum & Rafflesia arnoldii both come from the Indonesian island of Sumatra, but it’s considerably easier to grow Titan arum outside its natural range, so that’s the one that’s more likely to show up at yer neighborhood botanical garden bein marketed as THE AMAZIN CORPSE FLOWER or whatever. ↩︎
